San Canes is a project of mine set in a world of anthropomorphic animals during the early 2000s. While there isn't any "official" (as in, featuring the real meat and bones of the story) comics or stories out there, I draw these characters a lot and I would love to make their stories come to life one day.

NOTE: I'm planning on making a separate site for San Canes in the far-off future, so this page won't have a lot of information, just the basics.

The Plot

It follows the lives of three dogs: Viktor, a bad boy siberian husky; Felipe, a happy-go-lucky german shepherd; and Maggie, a tech girl shiba inu. The three of them live in the ill-fated town of San Canes, once a touristic spot, now a forgotten relic of years past struggling to get afloat. Regardless of what it is, like criminal organizations or police corruption; there's so much hidden under the surface, and our trio of protagonists will uncover those truths to save their home.

The Main Characters

Viktor Smirnov
24 / he/him / dog (siberian husky)

Viktor had a tough life; a bad relationship with his family, deemed as a volatile and confrontational troublemaker at his school, and overall a lone wolf (or husky). Tragedy struck before he had a chance of graduating, making him reconsider how he wants to live his life, so he took his belongings in an old beat-up car he’s been saving up for and never turned back.

After some years of travelling around, getting into fights, running from the law and other things; Viktor decided to stop by the quaint town of San Canes, where unbeknownst to him, he would stay in for longer than he ever anticipated, thanks to a couple of beers he unsuccessfully tried to shoplift.

Viktor is the type of person to voice their opinions bluntly. “I don’t care what other people think,” he says, which isn’t true; he enjoys getting a reaction out of people. He’s lazy, likes to complain, and always stands for what he believes in. Despite his unfriendly demeanor, he has a soft spot for those in need, kids who grew up like he did. He’s not a terrible person, just one who copes with his issues in terribly unhealthy ways for both himself and others around him.

His love-hate friendship with Felipe is one of his biggest obstacles as of now. Why is this guy so insistent in them being friends? He can’t stand his happy-go-lucky positive attitude, and he can’t help but wonder if perhaps there’s something he’s hiding under that sparkly smile.

Felipe Rodríguez
23 / he/him / dog (german shepherd)

Born and raised in San Canes, Felipe enjoyed a normal childhood. He had a best friend to play with, spent time with his grandparents and their local grocer’s shop, and spent his days enjoying what the small town had to bring. However, things changed when he started high-school. His best friend ditched him for a ‘cooler’ group of friends, his grades were dropping, and he had to go through the loss of his grandfather.

He decided to leave San Canes for college, which he ended up dropping out of after a pretty hard year for him. When he came back, the town wasn’t the same. An economic crisis struck the country, and many of his lifelong neighbors had left. He rekindled his friendship with that old friend, mostly out of pity for him, but his family was next to go as they needed treatment out of town for Felipe’s grandmother. Then, he decided to stay by himself in San Canes, taking over the shop and living an adult life by himself.

Felipe is the town’s ‘golden boy’. Always helping others, being a good listener, and letting others use him as a doormat. Others’ expectations keep his world moving, and there’s nothing he hates more than leaving a bad impression on someone. However, his unwavering optimism is a near-rarity in this town, where everyone seems to have a terrible time.

Even if Viktor stole some beers from his shop, he can’t avoid feeling bad for him, like he could use someone to talk to.

Magalí "Maggie" Cardozo
21 / she/her / dog (shiba inu)

Maggie was the ugly duckling of her class. That weird nerdy girl who kept watching cartoons as a teenager, the oddball who had a weird obsession with Law & Order. Now as an adult, she spends her days hanging around at the cybercafé and the library, close to her interests and far away from people.

While not one to make friends, she constantly crosses paths with Viktor and Felipe, aiding them with information and stuff they need. She’s overtly blunt and doesn’t get why others have such a hard time saying what they really think.
