Arles Brouillard is an apefolk adventurer, formerly known as "The Monkey Captain of the Nameless Pirates". After years of leading a crew of feared pirates, he resigned from his position as captain, both in seek of redemption, forging his own path in life, and reconnecting with his brother.

BACKSTORY

Born into a humble monkey family, Arles and his baby brother Jordain enjoyed a tranquil life in the lower parts of the city. Yet tragedy would strike, as their parents were murdered in a robbery when they were little. This led Arles to take care of Jordain in the grimy streets, learning to fend for himself. Soon after, Arles discovered his own magical powers: spells of trickery and illusion. He would swindle vendors, disguise himself, and do everything to keep his brother and him well fed.

During a particularly intense chase with a butcher he had just stole from, Arles hid in what he thought was a cargo ship. Turns out, he jumped into a pirate ship, which he realized as they pointed their rusty swords at him. He was now held captive, brought in front of the ship's captain. Even though her expression was unreadable, Arles' illusions piqued her interest. As a sort of payback, they gave him cleaning duties, which he thought was humiliating. In a turn of events, the ship was under attack by a rival pirate crew, and he was the only one who was able to hide. He was able to scare the other pirates with his illusions, which made the others respect him and give him a spot in their crew.

Years went by, with Arles getting money, a place to live, and the bad reputation that comes with being a pirate. Many of the ship's captains would die, quit, or disappear into the mist, with their first mate succeeding them. Eventually, Arles became the new captain. The feared Monkey Pirate of the Nameless Crew.

Inspired by his older brother and the need to be on his own, Jordain joined a dangerous gang. Arles opposed to this; he knew they were bad news and that he could end up hurt. This struck a nerve with Jordain, who pointed out his brother's hypocrisy. Things with the two brothers soured after that, but it did make Arles reconsider a lot of things. First thing in the morning, Arles quit his position as captain, hoping to be a better example to Jordain. And as soon as he came home, Jordain and his things were gone. Arles lost his pirate life, his only family—both the only things he cared for. With nothing and no one to take care of, he let himself be captured by the authorities of the city.

Six months passed in his tiny cell, when he got a second chance: to use his powers for good, to become an adventurer. Since then, Arles has tried to redeem himself in his own way, not really abandoning his ideals, yet refusing to let his past define him.

PERSONALITY

  • Arles lives by his own rules, and whenever other people's rules sound dumb, he's first in line to break them.
  • He knows how to move through life; who to trust and not trust; who's sketchy and who's trustworthy, etc.
  • He has a steady temper, not letting his emotions get in the way of his goals. He rarely lets his vulnerabilities show.
  • "It is what it is," he usually says to life's shortcomings. Nonetheless, he's quick with improvising on the run.
  • He's always on the move, and it's believed to be impossible for him to just stand still.
  • Bold and daring, he laughs at the face of danger.
  • Unconditionally loyal to those who had helped him before. No matter what, or how, he'll pay you back.
  • On the other side, he's known to hold grudges against those who had done him wrong.
  • Despite showing nonchalance about it, he hates to be reminded of his misdoings, especially those that were hard, bridge-cutting choices to make.

SKILLS

Despite not excelling with raw strength, Arles is swift and evasive in combat. He can fend himself with the help of his golden rapier, a souvenier from one of his many treasure heists.

However, he's not just skilled with swordfighting; Arles is a master of illusion sorcery. He can conjure dense clouds of fog, dissapear out of sight, make fake clones of himself, etc. His battle strategy is to never let his opponents know what's his next move.

Besides that, he's got sturdy monkey paws, good for climbing and swinging with ease. He's particularly dextrous with his tail, which acts as a fifth limb.

TRIVIA

  • His experience as a pirate captain left him with a lot of navigation knowledge, and despite not showing it, he became a nerd on marinelife.
  • He has a secret journal where he writes his own discoveries, feelings, and other stuff he finds cool.
  • After a long day of adventuring, he particularly enjoys a good pint at the local tavern. He can hold his liquor after a good couple of beers surprisingly.
  • He enjoys watching the sun rise from an old dock near the beach. The salty smell of the ocean does wonders to calm his nerves.
